6th Grade Math is the critical bridge to pre-algebra, where we learn how numbers relate to each other in the real world. We'll explore concepts like ratios and rates, which are the building blocks for everything from calculating the best deal at the grocery store to understanding speed limits. This course is designed to develop strong proportional reasoning and problem-solving skills, turning abstract ideas into practical tools for everyday life.
Understanding Ratios & Rates: We'll look at real-world comparisons. For example: "If a recipe calls for 2 cups of flour to make 12 cookies, what is the ratio of flour to cookies?" We'll also tackle unit rates, like figuring out who is running faster if one person runs 100 meters in 15 seconds and another runs 200 meters in 32 seconds.
Dividing Fractions: We'll answer practical questions like, "How many 1/4-pound burgers can you make from 3/4 of a pound of ground beef?" This makes the concept of dividing fractions tangible.
Integers (Positive & Negative Numbers): We'll use a number line to understand concepts like temperature changes (e.g., "If it's -5 degrees and gets 10 degrees warmer, what's the new temperature?") and bank account balances.
Solving One-Step Equations: This is the first step into algebra. We'll solve mysteries like, "I bought a snack for $3 and now have $12 left. How much money did I start with?" by setting up and solving the equation x - 3 = 12.
Our calendar operates on a two-week rotating schedule (Week A & Week B).To create an immersive and focused learning environment, we have designated Math Days (Mon/Wed/Fri) and ELA Days (Tue/Thu). This structure is designed for maximum flexibility - sessions held in the morning during Week A will be in the afternoon during Week B, so you can always find a time that works. All times are in MST.
