In 5th Grade Math, we transform abstract numbers into real-world tools. This course is designed to build a rock-solid foundation for middle school by making math tangible and intuitive. We move beyond just memorizing rules to understanding why they work, whether we're calculating the cost of groceries, sharing a pizza fairly, or figuring out how many boxes can fit in a truck. Our goal is to build the confidence and critical thinking skills needed to conquer any mathematical challenge.
Operations with Fractions: Instead of just adding fractions on paper, we'll figure out how to combine recipe ingredients. For example: If a recipe calls for 1/2 cup of flour and you need to add another 3/4 cup, how much is that in total?
Understanding Decimals: We'll connect decimals to money to make them easy to understand. For example: Is $5.75 more or less than $5.80? We'll master comparing and calculating with decimals so tasks like splitting a lunch bill become simple.
Volume Concepts: We'll move from 2D shapes to 3D spaces by asking practical questions. For example: "How many small sugar cubes can fit inside a larger cereal box?" This makes the concept of volume (length x width x height) easy to visualize.
Graphing on the Coordinate Plane: We'll learn how to read and create simple maps by plotting points. For example: If you start at home (point 0,0) and walk 3 blocks east and 4 blocks north to get to the park, what are the park's coordinates on the map?
Our calendar operates on a two-week rotating schedule (Week A & Week B).To create an immersive and focused learning environment, we have designated Math Days (Mon/Wed/Fri) and ELA Days (Tue/Thu). This structure is designed for maximum flexibility - sessions held in the morning during Week A will be in the afternoon during Week B, so you can always find a time that works. All times are in MST.
