In 5th Grade ELA, we dive into the world of stories, information, and powerful communication. This course is designed to turn students into skilled readers and confident writers by exploring exciting fiction and fascinating non-fiction. We move beyond just reading the words on the page to understanding an author's purpose, pulling out key details, and supporting our own ideas with solid evidence. Our goal is to empower students to express their own thoughts clearly, whether they're crafting a compelling story, a persuasive argument, or an informative report.
Making Inferences & Quoting Accurately: We'll learn to be reading detectives. For example: If a character is described as shivering and looking at gray clouds, we can infer it's cold. We'll then learn to find the exact sentence in the text that proves our inference is correct.
Finding the Theme: We'll uncover the "big idea" or message in a story. For example, after reading a fable like "The Tortoise and the Hare," we'll discuss how the events in the story show that "slow and steady wins the race."
Comparing and Contrasting Stories: We'll look at how different stories can be similar. For example, we might compare two different versions of the Cinderella story from different cultures to see what they have in common and what makes them unique.
Writing Different Text Types: We'll practice writing for different purposes. Students will write a narrative about a fun weekend, an opinion piece arguing for a favorite type of pet, and an informative paragraph explaining how a plant grows.
Our calendar operates on a two-week rotating schedule (Week A & Week B).To create an immersive and focused learning environment, we have designated Math Days (Mon/Wed/Fri) and ELA Days (Tue/Thu).
